In 1888, a group of 50 Santa Barbara women recognized it was time for the growing community to have a hospital – a not-for-profit facility dedicated to the well-being and good health of all residents, regardless of one’s ability to pay.
Today, 122 years later, Cottage Health System stands as the single not-for-profit provider of acute hospital care in the greater Santa Barbara region. We are mindful of the weight that responsibility bears, and recognize that it comes with an unwavering duty to provide both clinical excellence and unparalleled service to our communities. We remain steadfast in our mission to serve our community with excellence, integrity, and compassion.

Every day we touch thousands of lives in many different ways, resolute in our mission to put patients first. Whether it's our exclusive designation as the only cardiac STEMI receiving station in the South Coast or our commitment to stroke prevention and treatment, we move swiftly in emergencies when every minute counts. And while responsible for the delivery of more than 2,600 newborns a year, we still pause in awe when mothers first meet their babies.
These are only a few reasons why people throughout the Central Coast have benefited from Cottage's expansion beyond a small community hospital to a regional health system. That's the Cottage story.
