SAGE Publications Donates $2.5 million to Cottage Building Campaign
New Medical Library will be named in its honor
June 25, 2007
The largest corporate gift in the history of Cottage Health System was announced today with a $2.5 million pledge by SAGE Publications, a leading international publisher of social science and medical research books and journals and electronic media. SAGE is headquartered in Thousand Oaks, California with affiliate offices in London, New Delhi, and Singapore.
The donation will support The Campaign for Cottage Health System, the formal fundraising program to help build the new Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital. The SAGE commitment brings the total campaign pledges and gifts to $74.3 million. In recognition of the gift, Cottage will name the new medical library at the new hospital in the company's honor.
Similar to the current Reeves library at the hospital, the SAGE Medical Library will serve not only Cottage physicians and staff but patients, students, medical researchers, and the community as well. It will be constructed during the last phase of the hospital building project in 2012-2013.
Plans call for sophisticated information technology in a comfortable, supportive setting. The design will include a large central area with sofas and chairs, a distance-learning conference room, and a bank of tables with internet-capable computer stations for online study.
As part of its gift, SAGE will make its extensive print and online resources available through the new library to the medical community at no charge. Medical libraries such as Reeves-which is the largest one of its kind between San Francisco and Los Angeles-play a vital role in a community teaching hospital mission, according to Ron Werft, President and Chief Executive Officer of Cottage Health System. "The library is an important resource for our public and for our physicians, medical and surgical residents, nursing students, and other professional staff in need of ongoing training and recertification each year," said Mr. Werft.
He added, "We are indebted to SAGE not only for its financial generosity but for allowing us access to their extensive publications resources. Through this gift, the new library will continue to maintain and enhance a long-standing tradition of excellence in healthcare education and training."
Blaise R. Simqu, President and Chief Executive Officer of SAGE Publications said, "As a leading science and medical publisher, we're committed to remaining closely connected to libraries. We are pleased to partner with Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in the quest to bring premier health services to the tri-counties and to support the new SAGE Medical Library."
