Aquatic therapy is used as an adjunct or substitution for traditional therapy treatment. Water offers support, assistance, and resistance, while buoyancy reduces the effect of gravity. Joint surfaces are decompressed, usually improving movement and decreasing pain. Resistive properties of water can provide muscular challenge for improving strength and endurance.
The goal of aquatic therapy or an aquatic exercise program is to use the physical properties of water to allow the participant to exercise safely and maximize the participant's exercising ability.
